Anyone who followed figure skating in the 80’s and 90’s knows Christopher Bowman. "Bowman the Showman" they called him for his ability to wow a crowd and appeal to judges. In a world of unitard wearing mean skating to sappy music, Bowman didn’t disappoint. Then he dropped off the face of the earth, rumors were circulating that he had a major drug problem and the rumors were right. Many of us were under the impression he had gotten himself clean as he surfaced in the 90’s as a figure skating coach and actor. Apparently not.
Bowman, age 40, was found dead in his hotel room in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose. He won’ two men’s figure skating titles in 1989 and 1992 and competed in two Olympics. His substance abuse issues kept him from earning the millions seen by many of his contemporaries. R.I.P. Christopher Bowman, you serve as a reminder to our young people of what can happen when you get involved with drugs.
