Is Perez Hilton Lying About His Blog Traffic?

Celebrity gossip wag Perez Hilton revels in his role as one of the most-hated figures in Hollywood. He may also be the hardest-working blogger making fun of show business, with 24 posts on an average day—and as many as 40 on a day with talk of a Britney Spears meltdown. "Advertisers come to me because I get a lot of traffic. I get a lot of traffic because I work hard," says Mario Lavandeira, Perez's creator. By "a lot" he means as many as 4 million unique visits a day, according to Lavandeira, although independent estimates put his traffic much lower. How much does that translate into cash from the Blogads on his site? Lavandeira stays uncharacteristically mum on the subject of exactly how much cash he rakes in, but Blogads lists a one-day "takeover" (all three banner ads on the site, plus a custom wallpaper) for $40,000.
Does Perez Hilton really get millions of visitors a day? Blogger Paula Neal Mooney doesn’t think so. She was playing around the other day with a fun little web tool (that I can’t seem to get into as of this writing) called StatBrain.com. StatBrain lets you know how many visitors your website gets on a given day.

So Paula played around a bit and decided to enter in Perez’ details and was surprised to learn Perezzers wasn’t getting millions of visitors each day, or even a million visitors. According to StatBrain and other traffic calculators such as Alexa, Perez gets less than 700,000 visitors daily. Paula also checked the details of some other popular websites and their traffic was as always reported. So why is Perez Hilton’s traffic a lot less than he tells everyone? Mind you, 700,000 visitors is nothing to sneeze at, but why would Perez lie about his traffic?

Could it be because he can command high advertising prices. To run an ad through Blogads on PerezHilton.com for a week, it’ll cost about anywhere from $2,000 to $9,000 per week depending on where the ad will run. And that’s just for a bitty blogad. How much do you suppose those big old background ads are going for? Would it cost the same amount if the advertisers learned Perez’ traffic is substantially less than reported? It’s an interesting question.

Just something to think about on a Monday afternoon.
