Does Perez Hilton really get millions of visitors a day? Blogger Paula Neal Mooney doesn’t think so. She was playing around the other day with a fun little web tool (that I can’t seem to get into as of this writing) called StatBrain.com. StatBrain lets you know how many visitors your website gets on a given day.
So Paula played around a bit and decided to enter in Perez’ details and was surprised to learn Perezzers wasn’t getting millions of visitors each day, or even a million visitors. According to StatBrain and other traffic calculators such as Alexa, Perez gets less than 700,000 visitors daily. Paula also checked the details of some other popular websites and their traffic was as always reported. So why is Perez Hilton’s traffic a lot less than he tells everyone? Mind you, 700,000 visitors is nothing to sneeze at, but why would Perez lie about his traffic?
Could it be because he can command high advertising prices. To run an ad through Blogads on PerezHilton.com for a week, it’ll cost about anywhere from $2,000 to $9,000 per week depending on where the ad will run. And that’s just for a bitty blogad. How much do you suppose those big old background ads are going for? Would it cost the same amount if the advertisers learned Perez’ traffic is substantially less than reported? It’s an interesting question.
Just something to think about on a Monday afternoon.

oh no you didn’t! Actually, there’s no way that StatBrain could ever be accurate, short of having access to Perez’s blog logs or being used as a plugin on his site. So to say what you’re saying is tantamount to calling him a liar. (Not saying either way; just saying that StatBrain is hardly accurate, just like Alexa is never 100% accurate.)
Hi Sam,
I’m not calling Perez a liar, just reporting on someone else’s findings and speculating why one would lie about one’s traffic in that manner.
I’m just asking the question, not making the accusation.
If you dig into his advertising, one of them is showing 55,000,000 plus ad impressions for one week.
Based on that, I’m pretty sure he’s getting the traffic he says he is. But I also think most people look at Perez Hilton dot com like they would a train wreck in progress. It’s one of those things you don’t want to see, but can’t help but watch.
It’s an interesting question you raise. Not many people use these tactics, but let’s say it’s all about marketing. The real problem is not that he’s lying or not, or why would he lie about his traffic (I think the answer to that one is obvious - advertisers money), is that, in fact, he’s not telling how many visitors he has. He only vaguely estimates.
Usually, bloggers who keep track of these kind of things are very accurate in giving their numbers but then again, a lunch with Paris Hilton is pretty expensive, so advertisers must be convinced to pay interesting amounts of money for ad space on his site.
Marketing is an interesting thing to do…moneymaking is a lot more!

I wanna know how much those backgrounds go for…if only I could charge $2000 per ad on my site!
I think the people who visit Perez Hilton go there several times a day to see what he’s going to say next. I know I myself visit his site at least 10 times a day, and I don’t necessarily even like him! So maybe he only gets 700,000 visitors but millions of page views. It says on that site that Backseat Cuddler gets an average of 8,373 visitors a day, but I know for a fact we usually get anywhere from 20,000-100,000 total page views!
I agree that he’s probably referring to hits per day, rather than unique visitors.
I once read that he posts up to 30 entries a day. That’s why people keep going back throughout the day. Advertisers probably don’t care, as long as they are getting millions of pageviews a day.

She didn’t call him a liar, Sam, though I don’t think the world would demonize the person who did. He isn’t exactly America’s sweetheart.
